Locks are an essential part of everyday life. They protect you and your family, as well as your belongings. Whether you need a lock changed or you've locked yourself out of your home, a residential locksmith has the tools, knowledge, and credentials to help. Here are three things you can do when you run into problems with a residential lock:
1. Bring the lock to a locksmith.
If you want the fastest service possible, you can do a little of the work yourself. Remove the lock from your door using a screwdriver. In some cases, you will need to remove the entire doorknob. Only perform this step if someone is home to ensure your house is safe while your lock or doorknob is missing. Take your lock directly to a locksmith. They can use it to reverse engineer a key which will open it. Alternatively, if you would like to have your lock changed, ask your locksmith to rebuild the internal components of your lock.
2. Call a locksmith to your location.
If you don't feel comfortable removing your lock yourself or you'd rather not leave your house unprotected for any length of time, call a locksmith. Due to the nature of their work, all locksmiths make house visits. A locksmith can help you get back into your home if you've locked yourself out. If you simply need the locks changed, a locksmith can do this onsite as well. They may be able to rekey your lock while allowing you to use the same doorknob and deadbolt, which can save you money.
3. Purchase new keys.
If you've lost your keys, you will need to have new ones cut. You will probably also want at least two spares which you can keep in safe places. Locksmiths can supply you with replacement keys. All locksmiths stock key blanks which can be cut to fit your lock. You've probably noticed that some of the keys on your keychain are a different size or shape than the others. That's because different keys are designed to open certain types of locks. If you have another key in the same style as the one you lost, show it to your locksmith. This can save time when it comes to choosing the correct key blank.
Residential locksmiths can help renters and homeowners get back into their locked houses. They can also rekey locks and create spare keys. Whether you utilize your locksmith's services in their shop or at your home, don't hesitate to seek help when you need it.Share
