When you are choosing an access control system, you want to choose it not only based on how it looks but also based on how you will use it. How Does an Access Control System Work?
The purpose of an access control system is to control entry into your business. The system identifies the user and then compares the user to a database to determine their access level. This allows you to limit access to valuable materials or data and also allows you to determine who was in a particular area of your business at a given time. This allows you to identify who may have made a mistake or committed a crime on your premises.
One of the questions you'll want to ask is the access levels you'd like your facility to have. Take a map of your building and separate it into zones. Then, you will need to determine what level of access will be required for that area of the building and who should be allowed to enter or exit.
For example, you may allow all managers to have access to all areas of the building while only allowing employees to have access to areas of the building that are relevant to their work.
What Security Components Do You Already Have?
The security components that you already have can determine which access control system you will want to implement. For example, if you have security cameras installed, you might want to make sure that the cameras will work well with your access control system. For example, if someone uses a keycard when trying to access a room, a security camera might record the individual and you may then find out who is entering your building.
How Frequently Can You Perform an Audit?
You may grant access to an employee for a particular area of your business, but this level of clearance might become unnecessary later on. If a card is not used for a period of time, you may choose to shut off access to that area of the building via the card. Your card could be designed to shut off after a period of time as well so that ex-employees do not retain access.
